An incredible taste in the air greeted us just as we departed the plane late last night, comprised of the natural hot and humid atmosphere for the region, (April is Nicaragua´s hottest month) and traces of burnt trash. "I love that smell," Alicia confirmed as we rode to the hotel in Managua. I am loving that smell, too, and today we can see many people doing just that as we drive from place to place.
We performed this morning in Nicaragua´s only school devoted just to music, (pictures to follow soon!) and we will play a full concert tonight in the center of an old market in Masaya. The school was filled with people of all ages who played mostly classical music on guitars and violins, as well as a small chorus. They responded to our curiosity about Nicaragua´s own folk music with a few songs that sounded very Spanish with the usual 6/8 rhythms that mix duple and triple beats. Here's video of me getting into what little I can understand of that strumming pattern while hanging out in my hotel room at night.
Every night without fail, a little white lizard would run up the wall and out through the ac duct, keeping me from getting too lonely.
